Shaped by experience, driven by passion

Esperance Abedi Zuena’s career journey reflects a deep commitment to leadership, service, and community empowerment. From an early age, she developed a passion for helping others and supporting individuals facing social and economic barriers. Growing up in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, she witnessed firsthand the challenges many families encounter when trying to access education and opportunities. These experiences shaped her desire to contribute to sustainable development and create pathways that allow communities to thrive.

Her academic journey later led her to the United States, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics, with minors in Statistics and General Business, from Western Michigan University. During her time at the university, Esperance demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence and leadership. She became an active member of the Lee Honors College and Alpha Lambda Delta, organizations that recognize outstanding academic achievement and dedication to scholarship and service.

Beyond her academic work, Esperance actively contributed to building inclusive and supportive communities on campus. She served as President of the Congolese Student Association and Vice President of the International Student Council, where she led initiatives that promoted cultural exchange, organized community events, and created opportunities for collaboration among students from diverse backgrounds. Through these leadership roles, she helped strengthen connections within the African diaspora and the broader international student community.

Alongside her academic and leadership journey, Esperance founded Sunga Organization, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to supporting children from financially challenged backgrounds. The organization works to remove financial barriers to education by providing support for school fees, uniforms, school supplies, and mentorship programs that empower students to pursue their education and reach their full potential.

Esperance’s leadership continues to grow through her role as Interim Director of African Collaborative Network (ACN). ACN is an African collaborative dedicated to engaging in advocacy, dialogue, and partnerships to expand access to resources and opportunities for the African community in West Michigan. The organization works toward building a united and engaged African community that serves as empowered stakeholders contributing to cultural, social, and economic development.

In her role as Interim Director, Esperance oversees day-to-day operations while helping strengthen the organization’s systems, partnerships, and community impact. Her leadership supports initiatives focused on advocacy, education access, economic empowerment, and community collaboration. Through this work, she contributes to ACN’s mission of uplifting African voices and fostering opportunities that enable individuals and communities to grow and succeed.

Driven by a strong passion for the development of African communities both locally and globally, Esperance is particularly interested in initiatives that combine economic development, education access, and entrepreneurship to create sustainable opportunities. She remains committed to using her academic background, leadership experience, and entrepreneurial vision to build initiatives that empower communities and create lasting social and economic impact.

"Esperance's journey is a testament to unwavering dedication. Her unique blend of academic rigor and heartfelt compassion truly sets her apart, making a profound difference in every community she touches."
